Hello, maps and Windows.

Does anyone have any BI maps already converted for CF? It'd save a lot of effort and time if CF players shared their converted maps.

Could someone compile 0.5.3 for Windows? The current Windows binary is at 0.5.1.

Thanks.

Yay! Too long time with no activities up there on CF! I started wondering if the project is dead. I am not a compiler specialist, so can't hlp.<br />Speaking of the BI conversion, I never tried it, sorry. From old-games.ru you can gather BI and both data disks + history line. BTW, I'd like to see LibIrc implemented in 0.6.0 - for IP lookup and just chatting about the game. Again, I am a single lifeless lamer who jumps between projects with a "WHEN IS 1.0?" sign.<br />

On CF I've just played the tutorial a couple of times and a couple of the skirmish maps. The one I did last night I really screwed up on, almost got wiped out but managed to skin through with two artillery units and three or four heavily damaged tank units. ;)

I downloaded the original BI, its two addons, BI 2200 and the Scenery CD contents from various sites.

What I need is BI2, not the US version, because the Scenery CD has some problems with BI 2200. It either doesn't work at all (what happened when I tried it, quit because of a file it couldn't find) or it makes the original BI 2200 campaign un-winnable by removing the ability of artillery to target terrain features.

I played BI 2200 some back in the 90's and I'm certain I was able to make the computer play all sides of a map. Very instructional to be able to watch the AI beat itself up! Haven't been able to make it do that now.

I've tried ASC but so far haven't gotten anywhere because I can't figure out how to make units pay attention to the move command. I dunno why they chose to go for such a keyboard heavy system rather than the simple click and click to move, attack etc. that worked so well on the original games. I click a unit, spacebar is supposed to be Move but nothing happens.

So if you want to try it again, don't hesitate to ask me

The simple reason we don't have those maps available on the website is
that we'd violate Blue Byte's copyright. I agree it would be very useful
otherwise.

Unfortunately, we don't really have a Windows maintainer anymore since
Silvio dumped that platform a while ago. If you manage to get your hands
on an updated binary I'd gladly put that up for the download links as
well.

Have fun,

I've never compiled even a single piece of software, and I'm a lamer. So I can't help in this. It's extremely sad. I hope I had a linux-user friend whom I'd ask to compile and publish the win32 binary. BTW, I wish someone wrote a java header that you won't have to "build" for each OS - just write down a new batch file. I guess that would prevent windows users from lagging behind... or, if you're willing to, you might place a Java build of the game on the website, replacing inconvenient IP-finder with a "lobby", replacing PBEM with server-side profile-to-profile transactions (for "slow play", which PBEM is a variant of). With a game being in Java, you could also release "crimson towns" - an online multi-directional shooter, utilizing CF unit sprites, but on a square-based grid. After that, you could even make some pay-to-use content in the CF setting (for example, release an online-only version of GTA 2). Then CF will eventually grow into a forum-based mul

Hi,

I'm still keeping an eye on CF and I will provide updates for Win32, Windows Mobile and Mac OSX - but there are no new features, that are worth to update now - ore did I miss something? The change log ends with 0.5.2...

Maps - yes - new maps would be a good reason for an update. Somebody may ask Blue Byte for the permission to convert the ancient BI maps...

What? BI still counts as "WareZ"? Then Old-Games.Ru should delete it from their download archives???

Hm, you're right. Not sure what happenend there. Anyway, there certainly
wasn't much in the way of new features. Mostly updated translations, I
guess.

I actually asked them for permission a few years ago. No success.

BTW, Jens, could you give Jagex a license of porting Crimson Fields to web-java? you might get some quick cash to get a paying staff, compiling the game for several extra platforms such as that Nokia phone with a PDA kboard ("first mobile computer"), DS or Pandora. Or issue that staff to upgrade win32 binaries (not to force Silvio return to win32, as he detests it).

One platform I'm certain CF will never be on is BREW. Binary Runtime Environment for Wireless.

BREW = Qualcomm's knockoff of Sun JAVA. BREW's SDK isn't free and both Qualcomm and all wireless providers a BREW developer wants the app to be sold through have to approve the app.

It could be something every cellphone company that sells BREW phones would want, but Qualcomm could say "Nope!".

Thus, with Qualcomm thinking they're akin to Nintendo, there's pretty much only shite for BREW apps and games, which of course are locked to the phone they're bought for and downloaded to. Phone dies? You get to re-buy all your stuff!

The Palm OS Zodiac and Zodiac 2 coulda been a contender, if not for their stupid DRM requirement for software to access the enhanced audio and video features, even free apps were required to use the DRM. Developers stayed far-far away from it. Without a large number of enhanced apps to entice buyers it was just a Palm PDA with two SD slots and a little joystick. AFAIK the only Palm PDA to have two SD slots.

Anyone tried porting CF to the GP2X?

GP2X is the past. Pandora is the future. Get a hold of a Pandora device (still in development, sadly) and port it there. Or port to Angstrom Linux (I can't reproduce accents as the "local.bin" of the Unicode here redirects to symbols of Rus.bin, so I won't see the accent letters I'm typing). From Angstrom Linux, it'll take less time to port to Pandora once it comes out (about Jul 2011 if nothing bad happens). The phone thing you told of sounds like Apple's SCAM (Super-Commercialized Application Management), only harsher.

You may want to take another look at the downloads page. ;-)
